Neighborhood Tree Questionnaire
We are at 130-ish “new” right-of-way trees planted in the last eight years. Let’s continue to plant, Highland Park!
Thank you for your interest! The Highland Park Neighborhood Association, with the assistance of Tree Lafayette and guidance from the City of Lafayette Urban Forester, will continue the initiative to add new trees along our streets and sidewalks in 2024.
Through this program, Highland Park property owners are offered the opportunity to purchase a tree or trees at $150 each for planting in the right-of-way (ROW) along your property. The ROW is the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. This price includes installation by a landscape contractor arranged by Tree Lafayette and will occur in October or November. All trees will be at least 1.5” caliper.
The City of Lafayette’s Forester will evaluate each property and make a species recommendation based on conditions of the planting location. The Forester will select the recommended tree(s) from the City’s list of approved street trees located at http://www.lafayette.in.gov/2031/Approved-Tree-List. Species planted along Highland Park’s sidewalks, since this initiative began in November 2016, include London planetree, several varieties of elm, several varieties of oak, black gum, ginkgo (male), Kentucky coffeetree, and Tulip. Species selection is not guaranteed, even if approved by the Forester, as trees are subject to seasonal availability.
Most properties within the Highland Park boundaries are eligible for this opportunity with the exception of South 9th Street, as the ROW does not meet the minimum size requirements.
By submitting your name, you are indicating your interest in this opportunity, are willing to purchase a tree or trees at the reduced rate, and agree to the program’s terms and conditions. The ROW along your property will be evaluated by the City Forester to determine the appropriate species and location before the tree purchase is finalized.
